Guess what. It’s my birthday eve, pals! That’s right, tomorrow, July 7, is my birthday. With each new birthday, I take a moment to reflect, and this Wednesday Word No. 74, courtesy of LoveThisPic.com, really got me thinking. The older I get, the more I’m reminded of how much of a work in progress I am. And that’s totally OK. It brings to mind the assorted rules and promises and benchmarks my much younger self created for my older self, and how simultaneously close and far I am from some of those plans. But the beauty of life is that it’s what you make of it. That’s why the late great French designer Coco Chanel’s words speak to me — “A girl should be two things: who and what she wants.” This is a step up, mind you, from last year’s proclamation: “I don’t gotta do nothing but stay black and die.” I kid, I kid. But in all seriousness, as much as I’m inclined to think of all the things I don’t have or how far I perceive I’ve fallen behind, I’m determined to saturate my foremost thoughts with how far I truly have come and where I’m headed. It’s time for me to unapologetically pursue the desires of my heart, and take steps toward becoming who and what I want to be. Get ready!
