Photo of the Week No. 50: “For the Birds”

December 15, 2018

This Photo of the Week centers on one of the prettiest little birds I spotted out in San Francisco. I wish I knew what species of bird it was. I love the iridescence found in its feathers and how it flows seamlessly between black, blue and green. It was curious, hopping around and then pausing to observe the scenery. Or perhaps it was in scavenge mode trying to find food. Now that I think of it, the bird has a tiny treat in its mouth. In any event, it was relaxing to sit back and watch wildlife, and is something I should do more of. Alternate titles: “The Early Bird Gets the Worm,” “Freebird,” and “Fine Feathers.”

Photo of the Week No. 15: “The Lion’s Den”

April 10, 2018

This Photo of the Week, titled “The Lion’s Den,” is one of many snapped during my first-ever safari at Pilanesberg National Park & Game Reserve. Oh, yeah … I’m in South Africa right now. My tour group and I made the two-and-a-half-hour drive from Johannesburg to the park, eager to see which majestic creatures we would encounter. Fun fact: Pilanesberg is home to what’s called the “Big Five”: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and Cape buffalos. This particular pride of lions (our tour guide Peter said there are about five different families spread among the 572-square-kilometer reserve), with two males and three females, was the first of the “Big Five” we crossed off our list. What’s wild (literally and figuratively) is that these massive cats were, by my estimation, a mere 10 yards away from our Jeep, relaxing under some shade, seemingly without a care in the world. I love this image because it’s such a slice of life that could be replicated with families, tribes, clans, you name it from around the world. Finding rest among loved ones is a universal action, and I’m amazed that I was able to catch these lions in the act.

Out and About: San Diego Zoo Safari Park

July 22, 2014

I can never pass up the chance to run wild in my hometown, sunny San Diego, California. I had the opportunity to do so last week when my family visited the Safari Park, which was a first for me. I liked it better than the world-famous San Diego Zoo (blasphemous, I know) because it was closer to my home and had all the animals I love.

This loony look of sheer delight didn’t leave my face while we were there.

See more excitement after the jump!
