Fancy Things Friday

August 19, 2016

Get into an all-new batch of must-have goods and wares in this week’s edition of Fancy Things Friday:

1. Why hello, Sarah Jessica! Very Last Detail lives up to its name with this darling Sarah Jessica Clutch in Black. The devil’s in the details, and I am over the moon for the gold accents and tribal icon. An added bonus is the versatility this piece affords. Wear it across the body, over one shoulder or as a clutch with the chain tucked in, and you’re ready to step out “Sex and the City” style. (verylastdetail.com)

2. You gotta risk it for the biscuit, folks! Lazy Oaf and Poppy Lissiman know exactly what I’m talking about with their Biscuit collab sunglasses, which are a daringly calculated risk with the dual black-and-white marble acetate and wild print. Plus, the black gradient lenses allow you to partake in an all-day baewatch with the object of your affection being none the wiser. It’s giving me “Saved by the Bell” circa ’91 swag and I’m here for every ounce of it. (poppylissiman.com)

3. Stick a bow on it, ’cause this Bib Dress is a real gift. The blue and ivory stripes have a certified nautical vibe, and the baggy fit makes me want to get real cozy. I’d go casual with the styling here and pair this frock with a low-top red Chuck Taylor or classic Vans. (cladandcloth.com)

4. All hail the queen! I’m talking about one of the greatest to ever do it, Sade Adu, who gracefully adorns this ill Queenin’ Tee from Zoe Love Designs. I mean, she has captured the hearts of generations, from my pops and uncles to J. Cole, whose only regret was being too young to date her. My love is king for you, Queen Sade! (zoelovedesigns.com)

5. And speaking of queen ish, feast your eyes on this regal Feathers Kimono Dress. The bold gold metallic feathers scream royalty, elegance and confidence. Compliments to Symbology for knowing a woman’s body and designing features that accentuate it in all its glory. The plunging neckline, the slit and the cinched waist? Here for all of the above. Get into an all-new batch of razzly-dazzly goods and wares in this week’s Fancy Things Friday:

1. Stop the presses! I’ve got to shout it from the rooftops how amazing this Rattle Tale Beige and Ivory Clutch from Lulu’s is! I’ve decided you just can’t go wrong with an envelope clutch. But this one is the envelope clutch to end all envelope clutches. So many things to swwon over: the snakeskin texture, the ever-so-subtle pop of gold, the hidden strap. (lulus.com)

2. “Ooh la la” and “oui oui” to these L’Éclatante Millefiori Derbies in Glitter from Bobbies Paris. Add some sunshine wherever you go with this sparkly numbers. You can’t help but smile looking at them. (bobbies.com)

3. I’ve got a sudden urge to tickle the ivories and recreate that iconic scene from “Big.” This darling Lazy Oaf Short Sleeved Shirt With Frill Hem in Piano Print is to blame. So many styling possibilities with this one, and it makes quite the statement. (asos.com)

4. You can’t tell from this photo, but there’s a wonderful surprise found on this Tie-Back Mini Dress in Blush. The bow tie back is too sweet. You know I love a good bow and cutout back. It’s also stunning in Light Olive. (forever21.com)

5. Leave it to Express to let us express ourselves. Check out this Express One Eleven Lipstick Graphic Tank, which really says it all. “If all else fails, put on bright red lipstick.” One of the tricks of the trade that always comes through. (express.com)

Get into another batch of must-have goods and wares in this week’s Fancy Things Friday:

1. Life is but a dream and dreams sure do come true. This White T-Shirt With In My Dreams Print is quite charming and, dare I say, dreamy. The perfect casual top for the daydream believer in us all. (chicnova.com)

2. This Craig Large Carrying Case from Delfonics is a roomy pouch that can be used to hold a 13-inch laptop, a portfolio of documents and other work essentials. But wait; there’s more! You can wear this bright bundle as a clutch. With hues like orange (pictured), dark blue and mint, this carrying case can be worked into just about any look. Can’t wait to wrap my paws around this clutch! (store.dwell.com)

3. Look at the penguins! They’re tiny and fun. Like little tuxedoed men about town. This Conversationalist Buttondown by Maeve is certainly a conversation starter, and would add the right amount of oomph layered under your staple winter coat. (anthropologie.com)

4. Way to bring it with this Cheetah Print Dress, & Other Stories. Now this is a black and blue that I can fully condone! There are so many possibilities with this dashing dress — with or without the belt, avec ou sans culottes — all of which are lovely. (stories.com)

5. New on my radar is Shabby Apple, a purveyor of elegant dresses for all occasions. Take for instance this Nutcracker Dress in black, which is giving me serious “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” vibes but also would kill at a gala or anniversary dinner. There’s nothing shabby about this chic piece. (shabbyapple.com)

1. Tuck all your essentials into this simple, sleek Kelsi Dagger Leather Envelope Clutch. If Kelsi were a human, she’d be all business at work and then the type to sip whiskey while dancing and laughing with friends until last call. (lastcall.com)

2. These boots were made for stunting, and that’s just what they’ll do. It doesn’t get any better than these Circus by Sam Edelman Black and White Leather Ankle Boots. The perfect cut, these edgy kicks combine tones and textures (I’m swooning over the black-and-white dots pattern) to make one heck of an anchor for an outfit. Get these while they’re hot, because with all this goodness wrapped into one pair of shoes, they won’t last. (lulus.com)

3. Don’t sleep on the elbow patches! Am I the only one who enjoys dressing like a middle-aged college professor from time to time? Show that you’re intelligent, quirky and fly with this tan Elbow-Patch Cotton Blazer. I’d definitely pair this jacket with some riding boots and a plaid or printed scarf. Or a slim turtleneck if I’m feeling extra proper. (mango.com)

4. That melanin tho! If you got it, flaunt it, right? Shout out to Legendary Rootz for giving us brown-skinned girls something that speaks to why we’re so awesome. Not only is this Melanin Defined Tee an informational tool, it’s a stylish conversation starter. (legendaryrootz.com)

5. The weather outside is frightful. OK, it’s not as bad as the East Coast, but it’s been a little nippy in Cali. And I just want to wrap myself up in this BP. Geometric Blanket Scarf. You know I’m all for warmth and functionality. (nordstrom.com)

As James Wright Chanel reminded us in his review of the Patti LaBelle Sweet Potato Pie, we gotta support Black businesses. Thanks to the good people over at Blavity, there’s a great selection of a few Black-owned companies to shop. These are just five of my favorites from that list. Get your Black Friday on, folks (pun intended!).

1. Yo! “House Party” has to be one of my top five favorite movies of all time. The epic dance battle scene. Kid’s iconic high-top fade. A young Martin Lawrence spinning records. “Switch!” Countless quotables like “‘Peanut! Fix us a couple glasses of Kool-Aid.’ … ‘Grape or red?'” That’s why I was so juiced to discover The Party Clutch by Kashmir VIII. It’s bright and fun, and will definitely be a conversation-starter. Wearable art! I live! (kashmirviii.com)

2. We are who we are today because of the sacrifices of those who came before us. We stand on their shoulders. Now it’s time for us to carry them on our shoulders. Look no further than this Because of Them We Can Signature Backpack, which bears the names of greats like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Marcus Garvey and others. I’m a huge fan of the black-and-white patterns on the sides. I’m patiently waiting for this sold-out piece to get restocked, but way to fuse empowerment with functionality and style! (becauseofthemwecan.com)

3. You can’t tell from this angle, but this Stay Woke Crewneck in Heather Grey is “emblazoned with the Adinkra symbol, Epa, which symbolizes law, justice, slavery and captivity,” Glossrags says. The sentiment behind the symbol is captured on the back, which encourages people to “Stay Woke,” as in keep informed of all the craziness, injustices and strife going on in the world around us. (glossrags.com)

4. This “Wynn” Print from DorcasCreates is simply darling. The pop of red with the glasses is a pleasant surprise, and the subject’s beautiful natural hair is enchanting. Yay, Team Natural! (etsy.com/shop/dorcascreates)

5. Tees in the Trap is speaking truth with its The Brunch Life Chose Me Tee. Nothing brings a sister joy quite like the promise of a bottomless mimosa-laden brunch with friends over the weekend. What can I say? I didn’t choose the brunch life — the brunch life chose me. Find me at The Pink Elephant in San Francisco with this one on. (teesinthetrap.com)

2. Not to be all matchy-matchy, but this statement tee from Tees in the Trap complements the scheme of all these other snazzy Fancy Things Friday goods and wares to a T. And with a statement as trill as I Love God and Trap Music, you’ll get plenty of compliments from those who can relate to you, you riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. You’re not alone! (teesinthetrap.com)

3. Mic check, 1-2-1-2! Don’t miss out on this preppy-friendly Check PU Collar Top. The built-in collar is just asking for a bedazzled, bejeweled necklace to kick it up several notches. (oasis.andotherbrands.com)

4. Absolutely stunning is how I would describe this glamorous, sleek Jarlo High Neck Maxi Dress With Open Back and Frill Detail. The high collar, bow, open back and peplum? Perfection! (asos.com)

5. It’s not hard to see why the The Abstract Pant slays. It takes something as commonplace as a black copped pant and cranks it to a level 10 with the dropped crotch and tie waist. Sophistication, comfort and ease at its finest. I’m here for all of it, AYR (All Year Round). (ayr.com)

2. Roial redefines royalty with these edgy Charcoal Earrings. Show that you’re on some queen ish by daring to wear these bold earrings, which mix gritty charcoal with charming gold. (karmaloop.com)

5. Do people find wristwear attractive? If so, you’ll be seen as a total fox with this Kate Spade New York Metro – Wild One Leather Strap Watch. 1. Stop the presses! These Paules heels from Aldo make quite the statement with its black-and-white polka dots and pale teal strap. The daring appeal of these strappy sandals would make me want to live dangerously and pair it with something unexpected, like a red or orange sundress. (aldoshoes.com)

2. Meet the talented Janessa Leoné. This Henningsen wool and lambskin hat is an effortless, classic beauty. It’s giving me quintessential film noir dame in the best sense possible. (janessaleone.com)

3. Miss Selfridge fuses naughty (think nautical) and nice with this Petites Stripe Pinny Dress. I predict sunshine, sand and beach umbrellas in this dress’ future. (missselfridge.com)

4. X marks to spot in this extra edgy X-It Through the Jumpsuit. You can’t see it from this image, but this exquisite number features a racer back with cut-outs. (gojane.com)

5. Let’s face it. I’m Too Cool For You and this tee proves it. Of course, you gotta bring it when you make such a brazen statement. You’ll prove them right, whether you go the tomboy route with some high-top Chuck Taylors and camouflage-print shorts or the girly route with a pair of skinny jeans, a loud lip color and bright pump.
