Photo of the Week: “Paint It Black (And Yellow)”

October 11, 2018

This Photo of the Week is striking as an image that captures a special moment in time, as the paint on this petite, square canvas hasn’t yet dried. It’s fresh. It’s as if the artist is just outside of the frame pondering his or her next brushstroke, or whether the painting has reached its completion. The artist deliberately selected black and yellow to fill the canvas, and is generous with covering the block. The stripes and swipes in the piece make quite a bold statement in such a small space. Alternate titles: “Not-So-Mellow Yellow (And Black),” “Abstract Bee,” “Quaint Paint,” and “Madness on Canvas.”

Photo of the Week No. 39: Tulips by the Twenties

September 25, 2018

This Photo of the Week features a beautiful flower bed filled with lily white tulips. This picture was taken this past spring during a jaunt to Magnolia in Waco, Texas, for their magical Spring at the Silos event. This image is fresh on my mind as I get ready to head back to Texas — this time Houston — for a quick work trip. I love the contrast here of the fresh, lush flowers against the backdrop of the rugged, rust-stained silo. I wonder if the local flora will be as impressive in the fall. I’ll report back, of course. In the meantime, get into these alternate titles: “Too Legit Tulips” and “Tiptoe Through the Tulips.”

Photo of the Week No. 37: Bouquet of Brushes

September 12, 2018

I could stare at this bouquet of brushes for hours. This Photo of the Week showcases the simple, effortless beauty of a jar of paintbrushes. For some reason, the brushes as a metaphor for people came to mind. Think about it. They’re all intertwined, each unique but experiencing this shared circumstance. The paintbrushes have varying degrees of wear and tear, and exude their own style. Which one are you? Maybe you’re the thin blue brush that’s just over it. Maybe you’re the exact opposite: The skinny white brush — poised, unblemished and ready for action. Or maybe you’re more of the strong, silent type like the brown brush directly behind it. Or the one completely out of place, on the table top. I think I identify with the wild-bristled little brush with the slightest flecks of white paint. It’s been through a lot. Its bristles are unruly but it’s standing tall. It still has work to do. Still has some fight in it. Here’s to seeing the extraordinary in the smallest, ordinary things.

Photo of the Week No. 36: “Beautiful Bride and Groom”

September 4, 2018

This Photo of the Week stars the lovely bride and groom, my sister-in-law Karla and brother Robert, who tied the knot last Thursday. They got married in a short-and-sweet ceremony at the courthouse in San Diego, which was such a beautiful venue. America’s Finest City never ceases to amaze me! I, of course, had the pleasure of serving as these love birds’ wedding photographer. What I love most about this photo is that it very much says, “It’s us against the world.” Standing hand in hand, with the San Diego skyline before them, I know that these two will conquer anything that comes their way. Congrats, Rob and Karla! Here’s to many, many years of wedded bliss. Love you guys!

Photo of the Week No. 35: Bestie Behavior

August 29, 2018

My bestie Yvette paid me a visit this past weekend, and it did my heart good to spend some quality time with her. This Photo of the Week stars her and my guy bestie Ronilo (well, his arm doing the absolute most). If you know them, you know that this image captures their essence: Yvette working her angles with subtle fierceness and Ronilo being more extra than guacamole at Chipotle with the finger pointing. He got that tattoo for Coachella, by the way. Hahaha. This image is hilarious to me because you don’t even see his face but you know it’s Ronilo. In any event, I’m such a lucky gal to have these two, who I’ve known since the fifth grade, in my life. Alternate titles: “Est. 1995,” “Dos Amigos, Dos Muchos,” “Besties Doing What They Do Best,” “Double Trouble,” and “Twice as Nice.”

Photo of the Week No. 34: Baby M in the Making

August 22, 2018

This Photo of the Week centers on the cutest little piece of decor from my sister’s baby shower this past weekend. As you may remember, Ayesha and her husband Skylar are expecting a baby boy. My sister took care of the decorations, and I was so impressed by the M that she decoupaged with a world map background. (P.S. I have a feeling that some of her other creations just may appear as future Photos of the Week here). What does the M stand for, you may be wondering? It’s for my future nephew’s name, Marquis (the “s” is silent, as is with the French pronunciation). I can already tell he’s gonna be bougie! LOL. Totally kidding! I’m so excited to welcome him. He’ll be here before we know it!

Photo of the Week No. 32: Goat Yoga Is the GOAT

August 6, 2018

Guys, I went to goat yoga last weekend and I’ll never be the same! LOL. Hear me out. The idea of goats — real-life livestock — roaming about a yoga studio, leaping from back to back is pretty ridiculous. But something about it was so relaxing and therapeutic. Not to mention, I burned no less than 1,000 calories from laughing at the sheer absurdity of it all. This Photo of the Week stars Burlap, a feisty doeling with an affinity for banana chips, who was one of two goats from Hello Critter that graced us during the session at Laughing Frog Yoga Studio in Santa Monica. It even looks like she’s in the midst of her own yoga pose. Namaste? More like Baaamaste. Amirite?! I’m telling you, it’s something worth trying at least once. Dare I say, goat yoga is the GOAT (greatest of all time). Trust me!

Photo of the Week No. 31: “Yaaasss to Yarn”

July 30, 2018

This Photo of the Week features a bright basket of yarn that made me fall “thread” over heels. See what I did there?! LOL. This image was captured at a crafting corner. Though the subject is something so simple, upon closer review, it captures a pretty complex scene. There’s a lot going on with the patterned tablecloth and tools, but the yarn in the foreground steals the show with its vibrant hues. And there’s a stray orange string ever so gently draped across the front of the basket. I also appreciate how the polka dots (I love me some dots!) get a little love, too. Alternate titles: “Cooler Threads Will Prevail,” “Darn That’s a Lot of Yarn,” “From Thread to Toe” and “Thread-to-Thread Format.”

Photo of the Week No. 30: “Feisty Bestie”

July 25, 2018

This Photo of the Week stars my Bestie in the Westie, Yvette. The pose she’s striking in this image is a familiar one, believe it or not. LOL. Turn the camera on and watch her show up and show out, anytime, anyplace. That’s why I love her! “Go best fran, that’s my best fran!” We were at Brown Estate near Napa a few months ago, and as soon as I started snapping photos, here Yvette goes gyrating and posing. This is one of my favorites from the day: the clenched fist, piercing gaze and powerful posture — it gives me so much life! Get you a bestie who makes you laugh like no other, brings out your inner weirdo, challenges you to get your life, and just adds so much joy when she’s around. Shout out to Yvette (a.k.a. Vetty, Shekinah, Ebbie, and so on) for being my ace!

Photo of the Week No. 29: “Belding’s Office”

July 18, 2018

Guys, I finally got to step inside Mr. Belding’s office! This Photo of the Week is a snapshot from my visit to Saved by the Max, the “Saved by the Bell” theme restaurant in West Hollywood. It’s been booked for months, so my guy and I were lucky to get in when a friend had a pair of extra tickets. As a kid watching the ’90s teen sitcom, I always dreamed about going on a date with Zack Morris at the Max (and sharing a milkshake while listening to “our song,” A12 in the jukebox — too detailed?), cheering on Bayside (and Slater) at a wrestling match, chatting by the lockers with my girl Lisa Turtle, and even being called in to the principal’s (Belding’s) office (for a good reason, obvi). On Sunday, we had the chance to dine and run wild in the restaurant, and, trust, I took photos of all the memorabilia. Having a separate room set up like Mr. Belding’s office was a nice touch. Super nostalgic! Of course, the wood-paneled room had a desk with a name plate and a framed photo of everyone’s favorite princi-pal, among other trinkets. Run, don’t walk, to Saved by the Max, and let me know what you think!
