Outfit of the Day: Professional Polka Dots

August 20, 2014

“Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8

This past week I started a new job! You’re looking at the first-ever official marketing and communications assistant for 826LA! Such an exhilarating time for me. The position is a one-year contract through AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), which is like the domestic Peace Corps. For the first time in a while I feel like I’m doing meaningful work, since I’m putting my skills and talents to use at a nonprofit writing and tutoring center that serves students ages 6 to 18. I wore this particular outfit to work on a day that the staff met to set goals for the upcoming year and review its challenges. I must say, it feels great to be a part of a team of like-minded individuals seeking to improve and maximize their effectiveness so that they can better fulfill the organization’s mission. Happy to be on board!

Outfit of the Day: On the Go in Green

August 13, 2014

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.” Jeremiah 17:7,8

Green means go, and that’s exactly how I spent my Sunday: whippin’ and dippin’. I managed to pack in church, a playoff softball game, prepping for my new job and taking these fancy outfit pics. Busy, busy, but overall, it was a good day — really good day!

Out and About: Literary Death Match at the Hammer Museum

July 28, 2014

OK, so the title may seem a little intense, but Literary Death Match is one intensely enthralling event, wherein two authors battle head to head by reading a seven-minute excerpt from one of their published works. In the end, the winner of the two heats is decided upon by a random game of skill and/or intelligence. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Check out the Hammer Museum scenery after the jump!

Outfit of the Day: Darling Day Dress

July 16, 2014

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” Proverbs 24:3,4

On a recent Sunday afternoon I visited my friend Sierra’s house in Richmond, California. I loved how much space she had and the backyard — overgrown foliage and all — which made for an awesome backdrop for this mini photo shoot in which I rocked some of my birthday gifts given to me by my bestie, Yvette. The sun was shining and the laughter was in abundance, as we enjoyed a small but tasty barbecue and grapefruit beer. It was a great day.

Outfit of the Night: Prepped and Pretty for Perch

February 25, 2014

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19

Last week I attended at Black Ivy Alumni League (BIAL) networking mixer with my pal, Zita, in Downtown LA at the swanky rooftap bar Perch (hence the name tag). While the twinkling city lights were amazing, I was taken aback by the vintage beauty found in the elevator lobby and couldn’t pass up the chance to tickle the ivories. And if this fun floral number looks familiar, it’s because it was featured in a previous Thrifted Thursday post. I’m quite fond of the tiny buttons and it’s a shame they were covered by my blazer due to the chill in the night air.

Outfit of the Day: Hues of Blue

February 10, 2014

“Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” Psalm 36:5

On a sunny Saturday, I set out for a day of adventure with some of my gal pals. I kept it casual but had to add an element of surprise with my retro blue and white polka dot scarf, which matched the hues of the cloudless sky. Quite contrary to the meaning of “being blue,” I was all smiles and had a lovely time thrifting and gallivanting with my girls.

Outfit of the Night: A Rockin’ New Year’s Eve

January 2, 2014

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17

This past New Year’s Eve I decided to stay inside with my boo wop. But just because we weren’t out at a club didn’t mean we couldn’t dress to impress. It was quite fun actually, wearing fancy clothes but being in the comforts of a warm home. I went with this spunky little party dress I scored for less than $15 from Fred Flare several months ago, and it was my first time wearing it. I love the mesh cutouts in the back. Overall, it was a perfect look to close out 2013.

Natural Hair Journey: Marley Twists Styled

November 6, 2013

I’ve had a lovely time styling my Marley twists and enjoying the luxury of not having to worry about the frequent upkeep of my 4B tresses. But all good things must come to an end, as they say. Here’s a look at a few of the many ways I styled these twists. Given the countless compliments (I’m amazed at how many people thought it was all my hair — a true testament to the great blend of the Marley braiding hair with my natural texture) and ease of wear, I will definitely revisit this style of twists.

Natural Hair Journey: Rope Crown on Marley Twists

October 21, 2013

One of my hair idols, Chescaleigh (Franchesca Ramsey), recently posted a rope crown tutorial on her YouTube channel that looked absolutely beautiful on her. She has lovely locs, but I thought I’d give the style a go on my waist-length Marley twists. After fidgeting around with the style for about 45 minutes, I finally got it to stick. While Chesca’s rope crown is regal and elegant, I think the style on my Marley twists was a bit bulky. I suppose that’s OK if I was looking to turn heads on a night out. However, this look may be a bit much for the work week.

What do you think of this style? Yea or nay?

Outfit of the Day: Meeting the Mom

October 1, 2013

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2

This past Saturday I met my boo wop’s family at his niece’s birthday party. This was a big deal since I’d never I met the parents of anyone I dated. I wanted to be comfy and cute, while also making a good, wholesome first impression. I’m beyond happy to report that I was well received! Yay!
