Photo of the Week No. 6: “Nephew Gets a New Toy”

February 5, 2018

This little angelic creature is my nephew Jordan, and this photo was captured on Christmas Day in the midst of him ripping through wrapping paper and boxes to get to the goods. As you might be able to tell by the smirk on his face, he’s in to “Star Wars.” I just knew that the BB-8 candy dispenser I bought Jordan would be a hit. I call this image, my sixth Photo of the Week, “Nephew Gets a New Toy.” There’s so much to love about Jordan, my favorite (and only) nephew, but I’m especially fond of his inquisitive nature, spot-on observations, gentle spirit and killer dance moves. And he’s the spitting image of his mother, my sister Ayesha. He’ll be 9 years old in May, and I hope he never changes.

Photo of the Week No. 5: “Birthday Boy”

January 29, 2018

I can’t believe that my geriatric guy, Berkeley Buster DeVoe, turned 12 years old last week. The birthday boy is my pride and joy, and makes my life so much more rich. He’s my protector, cuddle bunny, smile bringer, mischief maker, cover thief, handsome hound and precious fur baby. The Berkster recently had surgery on his neck to remove a lump, which thankfully wasn’t cancerous. While he heals, he’s been in a donut (a gentler alternative to the cone of shame) to prevent him from scratching his stitches. This photo was captured moments after I took the donut off to let his wounds breathe and treated him to some Beggin’ Strips, one of his all-time favorite snacks. Berkeley may be getting up there in age, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Feast your eyes on “Birthday Boy,” my fifth Photo of the Week, depicting Berkeley lounging in his bed with his party favors at the ready.

Photo of the Week No. 4: “Pit Bull in the Park”

January 22, 2018

This past Saturday, I hung out at the park with my guy and his dog, Jacc, the regal pit bull featured in this Photo of the Week. Our outing at the park was threefold: Let Jacc run amok and get some exercise, spend some quality time with him and Dash, and take some photos along the way. Say what you want about pit bulls, but Jacc is as obedient and loving as they come. He even lets me cradle him in my arms like a baby — all 60 pounds of him! He’s a beautiful boy, with his big brown eyes, floppy ears and dreamy grey coat. It’s no wonder why Jacc’s so photogenic. Stay tuned for more images of him in this feature, obvi. I call this one, my fourth Photo of the Week, “Pit Bull in the Park.”

Photo of the Week No. 3: “Azalea, Commander of Cute”

January 15, 2018

My cute little 11-month-old niece, Azalea, is the star of my third Photo of the Week. And there’s plenty more where that came from because she is the most adorable little human I’ve ever laid eyes on. This image was captured the day before Christmas, as my siblings, Zae and I were hanging out in the loft area at my mom’s house in Menifee. Zae is completely enamored by cell phones, and she being the sticky-finger bandit that she is snatched my sister Ayesha‘s unattended phone, which looks like a vintage camera. This was literally a Kodak moment in the making. I was snapping away, flash and all, when she looked up at me as if to say, “Can you cool it with the photos, auntie?!” And that’s the image that I now call “Azalea, Commander of Cute.”

Photo of the Week No. 2: “Serving Face All Summer”

January 8, 2018

It’s time for another Photo of the Week, friends! For my second installment of 2018, I’m featuring my beautiful sister Ayesha. I call this one “Serving Face All Summer,” because that’s exactly what she did. This photo was taken at my job’s summer party at the world-famous Santa Monica Pier, which is all about fun in the sun. Amid all the day’s revelry, I captured my sister in one of her infamous “face-times.” To the naked eye, it may look unrehearsed but Esha is no stranger to working her angles. I’m quite proud of myself for catching those cheekbones hitting the light just right.

Out and About: My Brother’s Wedding Day

May 19, 2015

Temecula in May is usually warm and sunshine-y, but May 8 turned out to be an overcast, chilly day. However, my family’s love and excitement shone brightly, despite the weather that day. It was a big day for the Sabree/Ratcliff clan, as my youngest brother, Jamaal, got married to his fiancé, Breana. The rustic venue, Whispering Oaks Terrace, was quaint and we were very glad to find that the wedding would be taking place inside of the venue’s surprisingly intimate barn. This was a shabby chic dream, with white stringed lights, baby’s breath in mason jars, dim lights, white linen, wooden chests — the whole shebang. My brothers Robert and Karim were groomsmen, and nephew Jordan was the ring bearer. I’ll never forget how beautiful everyone looked and how much love filled the room. It was tangible. Long story short: My brother’s wedding day was incredible, and I’m so excited to see Jamaal and Breana grow as a couple. Welcome to our wacky, loving family, Bree! No take-backs. LOL.

Out and About: San Diego Zoo Safari Park

July 22, 2014

I can never pass up the chance to run wild in my hometown, sunny San Diego, California. I had the opportunity to do so last week when my family visited the Safari Park, which was a first for me. I liked it better than the world-famous San Diego Zoo (blasphemous, I know) because it was closer to my home and had all the animals I love.

This loony look of sheer delight didn’t leave my face while we were there.

See more excitement after the jump!

Outfit of the Day: Sweaters With Subtlety

December 19, 2013

“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13

I relish the opportunities I get to spend with family. This is a casual outfit I rocked while grabbing dinner with my brother (pictured) and dad in Culver City. Pops bought me this ultra swagged out “Too Tuff” sweater featuring Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy from a gift shop in Florida more than a decade ago. Vintage! I kept it pretty low key but jazzed it up with the subtle hints of gold around my neck and wrist. You can’t see it that clearly but the thrifted scarf tied around my purse has bits of gold and is lined in red, which accentuates my red lips. Sweater season is in full swing and I’m looking forward to spicing up some old pieces.

Sweater: Florida Gift Shop
Collared Shirt: Thrifted
Skinny Jeans: C. USA
Oxford Shoes: Miss Me?
Purse: Thrifted
Necklace: Thrifted
Watch: Target

Mother’s Day Q&A

May 12, 2013

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mommas out there! You make the world go ’round. To commemorate this special day, I decided to do a fun Q&A with my lovely, silly mother, Jean. She has successfully birthed and raised six of us children: Kevin (32), Me (28), Robert (27), Karim (25), Ayesha (24) and Jamaal (22). And she never had to have a C-section and reports that she never left any of us in a public place.

A few fun facts about my siblings: I hold the record for staying in the womb the longest, while Karim left the soonest. Jamaal was the most painful birth for my mother, as he weighed nearly 10 pounds. Robert and I are “Irish twins” in that we are the same age for a month between May 30 (Robert’s birthday) and July 7 (my birthday). Jamaal and I share the same birthday, six years apart.

A few fun facts about my mom: She goes by “Alison” around family. Expressions and Sentiments is the name of her gift basket business that she is relaunching. Her mac and cheese will change your life! And last but not least, she is the best mom on Earth!

Champy, thanks for your selflessness and unconditional love. I appreciate EVERYTHING you do for us knuckleheaded kids, big and small. You are the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman, and I hope to be just like you when I grow up. I love you!

My mom as a youngster. Can you see the resemblance between us?

Here we go!

Can you share any funny hospital or labor stories? I pooped while having Kevin.

Do you miss being pregnant? If so, why? Yes, because you get to eat everything and people make a fuss over you. No, because you get fat.

When you were younger, did you have a preference how many kids you had and what gender? Eight: 4 boys and 2 sets of twins.

What were some of the names you wanted to give us? Ashley: Ashley or Ruth; Ayesha: Daisey or Karima; Jamaal: Jamaal or Matthew.

Why did you want a big family? Because it was just me and Carol (her younger sister).

What’s the best part about motherhood? Giving life.

What’s the best Mother’s Day gift you ever got? All the homemade gifts.

What’s the weirdest, strangest or worst gift one of us has given you? They all have been great (Way to be diplomatic, Mom. LOL).

What has having children taught you? To love unconditionally.

Did parenting get easier as you had more kids? Yes, you learn how to do it better.

Did your parenting style evolve throughout the years? How so? Yes, I stop sweating the small stuff.

What are some of your proudest moments as a mother? Seeing my kids graduate from high school and college.

Put this question to rest, once and for all: Who is your favorite? It’s impossible to have a favorite. You all have such different personalities.
