Fancy Things Friday

February 26, 2016

Get into this swoon-worthy batch of goods and wares in this week’s edition of Fancy Things Friday:

1. These All Black Fishscale Flats are really all white, but that’s quite all right. Now I’m totally in the know that fishscale texture is a thing (where do they come up with this stuff?!), and I’m here for all of it. There’s a distinct retro vibe to these flats that’s got me craving batwing sweaters and acid wash denim. (anthropologie.com)

2. What happens when you fuse grit with glamour? You get these daring Logan Gold Stud Earrings in Platinum Drusy. Simple yet so complex, these earrings will elevate any look. (kendrascott.com)

3. Textures and patterns and warmth. Oh my! Could this Knit Sweater in Pink Melange be any more perfect? The sleeves are long and puffy, almost reminiscent of a Victorian-era blouse, and the knit pattern just screams “fun times.” Pretty in pink, for realsies! (hm.com)

4. Carefree and flowy, this lovely Petites Ivory Spot Wrap Dress is a reminder that spring is on the horizon. I’d pair this piece with some espadrilles, a floppy hat or a wool fedora (you know — play with fabrics), an oversized clutch and a delicate charm necklace. Wear this one to a park picnic with the boo wop or an upscale brunch with the gals. The world is your oyster! (missselfridge.com)

5. Show off those gams and make the boys blush with this Thigh Hi And Hello Curved Hem Dress in Blush. This GoJane creation is a game-changer. I’ve never seen a bodycon-esque dress with a curved hem. It hugs all the right curves and helps put your best leg forward, if you catch my drift 😉 (gojane.com)

Get into an all-new batch of swoon-inducing goods and wares in this week’s Fancy Things Friday:

1. Front Row Shop was all, “I am woman; hear me roar,” when it concocted this Pink Asymmetric Zip PU Jacket. Edgy and fierce with a feminine touch, because, hello. Pink. It’s the details that do it for me here: the notched lapels and the ribbon zipper pulls. Plus, the asymmetric look is on fleek — just like your auntie’s haircut circa ’89. (frontrowshop.com)

2. These Mountain Post – Peaks Sterling Silver Stud Earrings from TheAngryWeather are giving me serious winter feels, as they’re reminiscent of snow-capped mountains. Chilly willy! The silver lining here is that these silver showstoppers are handmade with love. (etsy.com)

3. They say El Niño is gonna show up and show out this winter. While we wait for the little-big fella to arrive, check out these Riff Raff Rain Boots from Nasty Gal. It’s literally where the rubber meets the road. Wear these fun guys out when the weather outside is frightful. But, hey, splashing in puddles with these would be so delightful! No doubt, they’ll keep you high and dry. (nastygal.com)

4. Remember when dark-skinned Aunt Viv danced for her life that one time in dance class, showing those haters how it’s done? (Still one my favorite moments from Ms. Petty LaBelle herself, Janet Hubert, although her recent readings have made me reconsider which reigns supreme.) Well, you can bring that look to life with this curve-hugging ribbed Little Miss Popular Jumpsuit in Rose. Just be sure to nail it with a statement necklace and a strappy heel, and snap in the face of any shade that comes your way. ‘Cause you cute and you know it. Yaaass, Queeen, yaaaasss! (fashionnova.com)

5. Math was never my strong suit, but this Black Geometric Print Bomber Jacket could make me fall in love with geometry. The black-and-white pattern is eye-popping and the faux leather shoulder patches help bring this stunning jacket home. Doesn’t it just exude power? (riverisland.com)

We’re knocking on February, and you know what that means: Valentine’s Day! Hate it or love it, this “holiday” got me inspired this week. Get into this batch of must-have V-Day-esque goods and wares in this week’s Fancy Things Friday:

1. How romantical! “I love you more than all the stars.” (*swoon) What kind of lady doesn’t like having sweet nothings like that spoken to her? This All the Stars Bracelet by Cooperative De Creation is a reminder of just how beloved you are. A delicate handcrafted piece, you can also feel really special wearing this bracelet knowing that it was made in a small batch with raw materials from Paris and Bali. (zady.com)

2. Or maybe you’re that type who likes love the hard way. You know — with a little edge. This leather Heart Fringe Pouch by Rebecca Minkoff is just that. The little gem also comes in a more subdued, pinkish Guava hue. Gals, go ahead and get your preorders in because it looks like this one will sell out! Go ahead and treat.yo.self to some fine leather goods. (rebeccaminkoff.com)

3. This Scarla Peplum Sweater serves up double the sass, as it can be worn with a subtle scoop neck as pictured or with the deep V-neck on the opposite side. Sometimes options are a girl’s best friend! (guess.com)

4. If you want to get real literal about Valentine’s Day, step out in this fierce Trench Warmer Belted Coat from Nasty Gal. It’s red, it’s bold and it’s smoking hot! Wear it open or with the belt. The world’s your oyster. (nastygal.com)

5. Bring some swag and sophistication to your notion of a suit with this Vanessa Suit Set by Jessica Rich. It’s giving me a touch of Janelle Monáe with the black-and-white color scheme. I’m here for all of it: the lapels, the stripes along the side, the buttons and the tulip bottom. (jessicarichcollection.com)

Get into another batch of gotta-have-it Christmas-inspired (MERRY CHRISTMAS!) goods and wares in this week’s Fancy Things Friday:

1. In the words of my boys Hall and Oates, “It’s you and me forever.” Yes, this Sarah half sequined clutch will have you smiling and rejoicing in the fact that it makes for a splendid staple night-out purse. Not too much sparkle but lots of versatility (peep the removable crossbody strap). I think she’ll make several appearances this Christmas and well into the new year. (thegooddanger.com)

2. Move over, blue suede shoes. There’s a new diva in town and it goes by the name of Belanger Loafers, thanks to the incomparable Jeffrey Campbell. These red suede numbers just scream “Christmas cheer.” Spread it with each step you take, be it at a holiday party, New Year’s Eve bash or on your first day of work in 2016, ’cause, hey, who says bright shoes are only for the last two weeks of the year? Not feeling so flashy? These kicks also come in (a pale-ish) pink, navy and grey. (shopbop.com)

3. Did I just transport back to the Gatsby-art deco era or what? This gorgeous vintage-inspired Gold Crochet Dress has me wanting to hear live jazz at a speakeasy as I sip on some absinthe. But more likely, you can find me wearing this exquisite floral-detailed dress as I wait for the ball drop. (modandsoul.com)

4. If variety is the spice of life, then the earrings found in this Posts Parade Set are the equivalent of a kicked-up gingerbread cookie: sweet yet spicy. They’re all quite darling, but my personal fave is the large crystal cluster, which adds a lovely bit of holiday sparkle to any outfit. (anthropologie.com)

5. Now that it’s officially winter, let’s not be shy about rocking those cold-weather pieces. This White Black Geometric Printed Scarf can warm my neck and enhance my ‘fit any day of the week. I’d love to see just how many different prints I could pull off while wearing this accessory, a la the legendary Iris Apfel. (genuine-people.com)

1. Tuck all your essentials into this simple, sleek Kelsi Dagger Leather Envelope Clutch. If Kelsi were a human, she’d be all business at work and then the type to sip whiskey while dancing and laughing with friends until last call. (lastcall.com)

2. These boots were made for stunting, and that’s just what they’ll do. It doesn’t get any better than these Circus by Sam Edelman Black and White Leather Ankle Boots. The perfect cut, these edgy kicks combine tones and textures (I’m swooning over the black-and-white dots pattern) to make one heck of an anchor for an outfit. Get these while they’re hot, because with all this goodness wrapped into one pair of shoes, they won’t last. (lulus.com)

3. Don’t sleep on the elbow patches! Am I the only one who enjoys dressing like a middle-aged college professor from time to time? Show that you’re intelligent, quirky and fly with this tan Elbow-Patch Cotton Blazer. I’d definitely pair this jacket with some riding boots and a plaid or printed scarf. Or a slim turtleneck if I’m feeling extra proper. (mango.com)

4. That melanin tho! If you got it, flaunt it, right? Shout out to Legendary Rootz for giving us brown-skinned girls something that speaks to why we’re so awesome. Not only is this Melanin Defined Tee an informational tool, it’s a stylish conversation starter. (legendaryrootz.com)

5. The weather outside is frightful. OK, it’s not as bad as the East Coast, but it’s been a little nippy in Cali. And I just want to wrap myself up in this BP. Geometric Blanket Scarf. You know I’m all for warmth and functionality. (nordstrom.com)

As James Wright Chanel reminded us in his review of the Patti LaBelle Sweet Potato Pie, we gotta support Black businesses. Thanks to the good people over at Blavity, there’s a great selection of a few Black-owned companies to shop. These are just five of my favorites from that list. Get your Black Friday on, folks (pun intended!).

1. Yo! “House Party” has to be one of my top five favorite movies of all time. The epic dance battle scene. Kid’s iconic high-top fade. A young Martin Lawrence spinning records. “Switch!” Countless quotables like “‘Peanut! Fix us a couple glasses of Kool-Aid.’ … ‘Grape or red?'” That’s why I was so juiced to discover The Party Clutch by Kashmir VIII. It’s bright and fun, and will definitely be a conversation-starter. Wearable art! I live! (kashmirviii.com)

2. We are who we are today because of the sacrifices of those who came before us. We stand on their shoulders. Now it’s time for us to carry them on our shoulders. Look no further than this Because of Them We Can Signature Backpack, which bears the names of greats like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Marcus Garvey and others. I’m a huge fan of the black-and-white patterns on the sides. I’m patiently waiting for this sold-out piece to get restocked, but way to fuse empowerment with functionality and style! (becauseofthemwecan.com)

3. You can’t tell from this angle, but this Stay Woke Crewneck in Heather Grey is “emblazoned with the Adinkra symbol, Epa, which symbolizes law, justice, slavery and captivity,” Glossrags says. The sentiment behind the symbol is captured on the back, which encourages people to “Stay Woke,” as in keep informed of all the craziness, injustices and strife going on in the world around us. (glossrags.com)

4. This “Wynn” Print from DorcasCreates is simply darling. The pop of red with the glasses is a pleasant surprise, and the subject’s beautiful natural hair is enchanting. Yay, Team Natural! (etsy.com/shop/dorcascreates)

5. Tees in the Trap is speaking truth with its The Brunch Life Chose Me Tee. Nothing brings a sister joy quite like the promise of a bottomless mimosa-laden brunch with friends over the weekend. What can I say? I didn’t choose the brunch life — the brunch life chose me. Find me at The Pink Elephant in San Francisco with this one on. (teesinthetrap.com)

1. I am absolutely head-over-heels in love with these Jeffrey Campbell In Love Leather D’Orsay Flats. Why, you ask? The two-toned dynamic duo of tan and black. You can never go wrong. Obvi. (urbanoutfitters.com)

2. Artitzia advises that this Sunday Best Dashner Dress be saved for when you’re feeling particularly coquettish, and I concur! The flowy cap sleeves and fit-and-flare silhouette are particularly flirty. Hey, boys! (aritzia.com)

3. It rained a good amount (well, at least for Southern California in the tail end of summer) earlier this week, and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t know what to wear. Not a good predicament to be in at 5 a.m., scrambling to get dressed and out the door for work. But I digress. I’m slowly coming to terms with the fact that fall, and chillier weather, is upon us. However, this swanky Mono Check Duster Jacket actually has me looking forward to autumn and winter. Plus, the vintage feel is an added bonus. I spy small pockets of houndstooth! (missselfridge.com)

4. Look like a walking masterpiece in this stunningly abstract Brush It Off Painted A-Line Midi Skirt. It paints a lovely picture of a avant-garde statement piece that commands attention. (gojane.com)

5. Way to play the wild card with these fun Leopard-Print Slacks, H&M! The possibilities are endless with these pants: day or night, work or play, heels or flats, neutrals or a pop of red — you catch my drift. (hm.com)

July 24, 2015

1. This Fancy Things Friday is decidedly and uncharacteristically neutral. This Camel Floppy Hat from Love Culture is a prime example of the versatility offered by a natural shade. (loveculture.com)

2. I would totally take out this Nasty Gal x Nila Anthony Take Out Vegan Leather Bag for a test drive on any given night on the town. Think of how much stuff you could fit inside this clever container! Not to mention, it’s pretty darn cute. Get ready for the endless barrage of “I love your bag! Where’d you get it?” (nastygal.com)

3. I’m all for the boxy and breezy One and the Same Beige Two-Piece Dress, which really is a misnomer because it’s two separate pieces. Semantics. There’s nothing wrong with a little belly peeking out, and the subdued hue leaves plenty of room for improvisation with the accessories. (lulus.com)

4. Channel your inner flower child with this stunning Motel Yulia Shift Dress in White Sunflower Lace. There’s something undeniably mod/1960s about this dress, which will certainly bring out your classic inner beauty. Simplicity is key here, gals. (motelrocks.com)

5. Turn up the heat on your office wear with this Sleeveless D-Ring Wrap Jumpsuit in Grey, and then turn right around and head to happy hour with friends at the end of your workday. Commit fully to the seriously stylish piece by rocking it with a killer pair of heels. (missguidedus.com)

1. Block out those rays this fine sunshine day with these Leopard Print Round Sunglasses. You’re gonna want these fun guys at the ready while stepping out this summer. (forever21.com)

2. I’m fascinated by how something so simple can be so elegant. I’m referring to these subdued Schutz Pearled Darussa Flats, which look like they’re made for royalty. It all makes sense when you consider Schutz’s mantra, “living for pleasure.” (anthropologie.com)

3. Turn the arguably worst day of the week into a party with this dashing Cheap Monday Tee Dress. No frills here. Just a wide-rib mock neck and straight, loose fit. Just use the signature print as motivation for all those checks you’re gonna be cashing in the future. (luckyshops.com)

4. Whether you’re ready to hit the gym or hit the club, this Banded Crop Tank in rusted burgundy will make you look like a superstar. I’m thinking dual-textured moto pants to bring the look full circle. (madewell.com)

5. Keep it carefree with these darling ASOS Pleated Culottes In Mono Chevron Print. (asos.com)
