Oh, what a night I had this past Saturday at 826LA’s “Let’s Do the Time Warp” dance-a-thon! Since September, my pal, Zita, and I have been raising funds for 826LA’s writing and tutoring programs. Our team, The Sister Act formerly known as The Tiny Dancing Queens, brought in $1,735, thanks to our generous friends and loved ones. And it all culminated in the dance-a-thon at The Unique Space in downtown L.A.
As you can see from this image, we dressed as the dancing girls emoji, and got rave reviews!
See more from this awesome event after the jump!
Though we were snubbed for the Best Costume and Best Friends Dancing awards (so many people told us we should have won, and I agree!), we didn’t leave empty-handed. Zita won a gift certificate to a local restaurant in a raffle and earned a limited-edition T-shirt. I won Dance Machine (Best Dancer) after dancing for my life in the Sould Train line, and I got an awesome golden trophy and a one-night staycation at the Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles! Yahtzee!
Best of all, it was presented by the host for the evening, Marc Evan Jackson (22 Jump Street, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and judges the Sklar Brothers (“Comedy Bang! Bang!,” “Entourage”). I totally jumped into the arms of one of the comedic twins, I was so elated to be called up on stage! Thankfully, he caught me.
And you know I had to finish with what my sister Ayesha and I like to call, “The Exhausted Performer” pose. You can’t see it, but I was panting heavily to add to the full effect. Feel free to use that one at your leisure. LOL.
Why, hellooooo! This is the move that sealed my victory, apparently. I call it “The Closer.” Just kidding! Going down that line was all a blur. I know I did some pop locking and show stopping for sure though.
Most importantly, we had an amazing time dancing like lunatics alongside some awesome people, like my co-workers and the others who raised a crap ton of money for this amazing cause. 826LA is a creative writing and tutoring center that offers free programs to students ages 6 to 18, and I have the privilege of serving as its marketing and communications assistant.
Holding us down were Dash, my bro Rob Grimes, Greer, Linda, Lola and Cliff. It feels great to have people in your corner who you can always count on!
Oh, and another highlight was Sophia Rivka Rossi of HelloGiggles giving us a shout out on her Instagram. Click here to see the clip of us shaking our tail feathers! We wanted to do the iconic dancing girls emoji pose but we couldn’t stop dancing (in keeping with the basic rules of a dance-a-thon).
All in all, I’d have to say this was the most fun I’ve had in a while. Definitely in the top five of my favorite memories from 2014!
