Last week, I fashioned a last-minute Halloween costume with my BF for his office party. I was able to make my costume with items I already had at home, and Dash’s costume was very cost-effective to put together. There are pictures of the finished product, but first take a guess at what we dressed as.
If you guessed a koala bear and a tree, you know your low-budget costumes!
My koala costume includes a plain, heather grey T-shirt and grey leggings. To make the belly patch, I cut an oval out from an old, white tank top and used double-stick tape to affix it to the shirt. For the koala ears, I used a grey headband, and taped on the ears, which I fashioned with some cardboard that I cut into the oblong shape, a white piece of paper for the inner ear part and double-stick tape (Who knew how versatile that type of adhesive was?).
For the tree, Dash found this ridiculous yin-and-yang green tree shirt from Walmart for about $7 and some khakis for about $13. I cut out leaves from a light-green table runner found at the 99-cent store and taped them across the chest and back, to give it some texture and really hammer home the point that this is a tree we’re dealing with.
To get that crucial koala nose, I used some liquid eyeliner to quickly draw out the shape. Of course, I added some blush and eyeliner to complete my face. If I was thinking, I would have painted my nails black to resemble koala claws. I paired this costume with some black flats.
Here I am in koala mode, feasting on some leaves.
And that would be Dash channeling his inner tree. So silly! It begs the question, If you could be any tree, what tree would you be, and why?
Lacking a photographer, we made do with our koala-and-tree pose. Wish you could see the full essence of the bear hug, but you get the gist.
Now that’s the most handsome tree I’ve ever seen!
Halloween’s a day away, so if you’re looking for a fast, cheap, creative costume, give these two a go. Our costumes were far from perfect, but we were able to pull them off on short notice. And, I think they’re cute.
