The day has come! I’m officially 30 years old today! It feels pretty weird writing that since I don’t “feel” 30, but I’m looking forward to all that my thirties have to offer. I bid a bittersweet farewell to my twenties, with all the great memories, heartbreaks, disappointments, triumphs and lessons learned. I’m hopeful for all that awaits me in this next decade of my life: adventure, career changes, love, peace, happiness, assurance — I want it all. With that being said, I present to you 30 New Adventures While I’m 30. Follow me on this journey as I make these aspirations a reality.
Read all about it after the jump!
1. Take bass lessons.
My parents bought me a Fender Squier bass guitar several years ago, and I feel shamed that I haven’t learned how to play the darn thing. I did teach myself a little bit of “Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson and the chorus of “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple, so that counts for something, right?
2. Recreate Aunt Viv’s iconically epic dance routine from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
I just can’t help but picture Janet Hubert dancing for her life to C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” every time I hear the ’90s jam. I must master that routine and put it out for the world to see!
3. Go on a hot air balloon ride.
I think it’s time to face my fear of heights. It’ll kill two birds with one stone by allowing me to see some beautiful scenery.
4. See my family in Detroit.
The last time I visited Detroit was a few years ago for my granddad’s funeral. It would be great to return under more pleasant circumstances and get some quality time in with my people.
5. Go on a road trip, and stop at roadside attractions and diners along the way.
Portland, Oregon, is one destination I have in mind. A trip up the West Coast — I can picture it now!
6. Go camping — tents and all.
I want to “rough it” and sleep under the stars for once in my life. Sounds fun, right?
It looks super fun, and it would only up my “California girl” cred. Represent!
8. Sing karaoke with a live band.
I’ve got the shower singing on lock and I’ve dabbled with the private-room karaoke. Why not take it up a notch (or an octave) and sing it loud and proud? I may even throw in some choreo. Don’t believe me? Just watch.
9. Go on a cruise.
A weekend jaunt to Cabo would be perfect.
10. Finish making my dinner table and throw a fancy dinner party.
There’s nothing like breaking bread with the ones you love. Even better if I’m surrounded by a reminder of my hard work while enjoying a meal.
11. Take a pottery class.
I need to channel my artistic spirit more often.
12. Learn how to DJ (mix and scratch).
This would be a dream fulfilled for sure. Not that I plan on playing Coachella or Ultra any time soon. Plus, my über talented BF has lots of knowledge to share.
13. Write poetry and prose.
There’s a certain freedom that comes with taking pen to paper and letting the page bleed with your cares, wants, fears and emotions.
14. Query a big-name magazine with a freelance story proposal.
It’s time to step out of my comfort zone and stretch myself professionally.
15. Volunteer at 826LA, WriteGirl or Young Playwrights Foundation.
I’d love to mentor a student and share with him or her all the things I’ve learned throughout my career. “Each one teach one” and “it takes a village,” for real.
16. Have a professional photo shoot.
The iPhone takes pretty decent pictures, but I want to go all out and do some rebranding with new headshots and images for the blog. Heck, maybe even stunt a little via social media.
17. Spend the weekend at a remote bed and breakfast.
I need to get away more often.
18. Make jewelry.
I have some nifty ideas floating around in this noggin of mine.
19. Bid at an auction.
It’s been on my to-do list since I saw Clair Huxtable bid for an important piece of art on an episode of “The Cosby Show.”
20. Go to a game show like “Let’s Make a Deal.”
I didn’t have much luck on “The Price Is Right,” so I want to explore my options.
21. Go to the VodBox at Nic’s Beverly Hills.
Any place that encourages faux fur coats and chilled adult beverages is all right with me!
22. Go to the gun range.
Should I ever need to fend off a would-be attacker. I’m sure it’s an empowering feeling.
23. Attend an ultra-specific but totally random festival.
I need more spontaneity in my life.
24. Do a 5K.
I rarely run, so I know training for a 3.1-mile race will be a challenge.
25. Take a trapeze class.
Wheeeee! Channeling my inner (suppressed) circus performer a la Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants.
26. Learn to bartend.
I want to learn how to make a good cocktail or two while entertaining friends and family at my humble abode.
27. Eat an appetizer, a main course and a dessert in three different restaurants in the same night.
Variety is the spice of life, amiright?
28. Learn to sew and make a wearable creation.
I’m tired of relying on others when I want something altered. And it would be nice to make one-of-a-kind pieces.
29. Take a tour on a double-decker bus, even if it’s in L.A. or a city I’ve explored before.
It’s good to be a tourist in your hometown. I’ve learned a few things by checking things out from another perspective, and it makes me appreciate the city even more.
30. Fly first class.
I deserve it!
